While caffeinated coffee remains the preferred choice, 20% of coffee drinkers opt for a decaffeinated option. As there’s various ways of decaffeinating coffee, there’s some confusion around how its done so we wanted to set it straight and explain how the ‘Swiss Water Decaf Process’ works.
1. Green beans are cleaned, pre-soaked and then immersed in hot water.
2.The beans are discarded and a green coffee extract is left.
3. The green coffee extract is run through a carbon filter to trap the caffeine.
4. A fresh batch of green coffee beans is then cleaned and pre-soaked, and immersed in the green coffee extract.
5. The caffeine in the new batch of green coffee beans migrates into the extract, while the flavours and oils remain virtually untouched.
